It borders Plano. From Murphy to downtown Plano it's about 5-7 minutes. But to the Legacy area, probably 20 minutes.

Were you able to find it on the map? Directly SE of Plano. Actually from downtown Plano on 15th street if you take it east, it goes directly to the heart of Murphy. It changes name to FM 544 in Murphy.

A part of Murphy is in Plano ISD and another part is in Wylie ISD. It is also about 7 minutes to the firewheel mall.

Lots of new developmentsare happening in Murphy, in fall 2008 a new supertarget is scheduled to open on FM 544 as well as a large movie theater.

Hehe, wife and I ordered our new dishwasher yesterday - Bosch Evolution 500-series. It's a water and energy miser - and I love the "half-load" and "quick-load" options. Should work out well when we have parties and go through a lot of glasses... especially with how quiet it is (51 dB). Now, on to researching clothes washer/dryers.

Speaking of dryers... I've been poking around, doing some math. It looks like upgrading to gas from elect costs $100-150, depending on the model. I've also done some research on how much gas and electric are used per load. In our current market, it looks like it costs $0.26 to do a single load on a gas unit; on an electric, that price goes up to $0.30-0.35. Taking the higher end, the cost is 9 cents per load more for electric, but at $100 upcharge, it would take 1,111 loads to break even. My wife says we go through 3 loads per week on average, which is well over 7 years to break even.

Anyone have any experiences in gas-vs-elec dryers? I've heard elect dryers are less of a fire hazard from the lint in the exhaust line catching fire.

Brian

PS: We have a gas and elec hookup in the utility room.

newbie,

You've got my vote for THE Resident Energy Efficiency Expert! I am thoroughly impressed with your research... could have used all this info on a house that we used to have... that continually had phantom drafts especially noticed in the winter... it became quite obvious that it was coming in around the windows... but we could never figure out how... I'm sure now that they weren't properly sealed based on how you found yours weren't.

And, yes, it's obvious you're an engineer! Since my son is an electrical engineer, I do recognize the pattern!

Keep sharing these tips... they are extremely informative!

I've been told it's a sickness.

anyone ever use the Kill-a-Watt? it measures electricity usage, especially useful to really see what those vampire appliances are wasting. i don't have one, but i've made a conscious effort to unplug as many unnecessary items as possible. some simple ones include:
1. cell phone chargers even when no phone is connected
2. extra microwave (don't know how common this is, but i've got an extra that my wife uses for popcorn only)
3. cable boxes are supposed to be horrible, but many do nothing about them because it is inconvenient

you probably won't see huge energy savings by unplugging the vampires, but the more people that do this, the more energy will be saved overall.

I have one. They're pretty cheap to pick up. I used it a lot for projects at several jobs now - measuring power usage on servers, switches, routers, etc - to calculate operating expenses. It's amazing when you calculate that in, how it can change your ROI.

What you are describing is "phantom load". Some of the more hard core greenies unplug everything when not in use. From a practicality perspective, I'm just not that dedicated. Bigger fish, IMO. It's that whole practical thing - if something isn't practical, people aren't going to do it (myself included). I'm not unplugging my TV, stereo, VCR and DVD player at night, then having to reset the time every day. I turn the lights off when not in the room, isn't that good enough?

i try to plug items that don't need to be on all the time (printers, old computer, paper shredder) into a surge protector. when i need them, i'll turn the surge protector on, then off again when done.
i've been thinking about picking one up so i can justify to my wife the reason i do this. i think she thinks i'm crazy.
