So I'm a weather nerd and it looks like we could get a prolonged (2-5 day freeze) next week, I bought a house with a pool, chlorine, not salt, installed in the late 90's. It has the temp sensor to activate the pumps at 33 degrees. Will I really have to have the pool pump on for five days straight? How will that affect my electric bill if I do? Would it work to instead have a heater in the "pump room" which is an enclosed area at the side of my house? Any advice would be welcome. What did ya'll do last year during the ice event?

Well, it probably won't have to work that hard. I have a freeze guard (I assume that's what you are talking about) and it only had to go steady for several days last winter. It's had to a couple of times this year already. I know we're looking at a few days coming up. Is your house gas or electric for heat? I welcome the winter months because my house is gas for heat, and it is so much cheaper. Yes, the pool pump should be going during a prolonged freeze. Keep the setting.

It won't be below freezing all that time - looking at the weather forecast - I'd bet over the coming cold snap the temp will be below freezing 10-20 hours over that span.

If you have a dual or variable speed pump your system will run on low while in freeze protection mode - or at least it should.

If you can increase the activation temperature from 33F to 35/36F. 33F offers too little margin for error.

Using a heater to keep your equipment from freezing won't do anything for your water lines near you pool and the portions enclosed in the pool. Water needs to circulate in the lines - pool and spa if you have one.
