Does $800 include the system itself or is it just the installation cost? I have no idea about plumbers' rates, but as I said it is no more than 2 hours of work for a standard under sink installation.

I haven't replaced the membrane yet, but according to the manual it is a bit more complicated than replacing the filters: shut off water, let the system drain, disconnect 3 tubes from membrane, remove it and put the new one in the reverse order. After new membrane is installed, the system needs to be sanitized and restarted (which is basically injecting 5 milliliters of unscented household bleach into the tubing and opening water valves).

Yeah, for $800 I'd pass on it too.

I'll ask a handyman friend of mine if he can do it; if not, I'll hit up the plumber I use for stuff not covered by my home warranty.

It includes the the system too I believe. Thanks for the info on changing the membrane!
