Got an offer at my dream job as software engineer down at Garland.

No idea what to expect in terms of neighborhoods places to go to, I'm used to low income areas and would like to have a change of heart and live in a less crowded city-type area.

Single, early 20s and have a drivers license and car.

Any recommendations as to where to rent?

Also how's the commute in the area?

Which part of Garland? (Major cross streets are fine) what is your budget?

I hate to say it, but your budget most likely won't get you an apartment in a safe area. You might want to look into getting a roommate, and splitting the rent on a 2/2 in the $1000-1400 range.

If you get anything in that budget, it will be another low income area. To find something in a nicer area, plan on $850 for a 1 bedroom apartment.

Lol. Dallas is less expensive than NYC but not THAT much less. $500-600/mo will get your a lovely old apartment in a crime-infested complex. Agree with pp's that $800-850 is about the bare minimum for an apartment in a safe part of Dallas.

Also, just FYI, South Garland is the worst part of the city, crime-wise, so don't plan on living close to work.

Of course, if you're moving from East New York or similar unsavory NYC neighborhood, the worst parts of Dallas are not as bad as the worst parts of NYC. Bad, but not THAT bad.

but $850 is good for a safe neighborhood then?

Any recommendations?

This isn't the most accurate information, but here is a map of rentals in the area:

Rentals in Dallas

The $500-850 rentals are most concentrated near:

- Cedar Springs
- East Dallas
- The Village
- Skillman/635
- Galleria Dallas (North Dallas)
- Brookview College (North Dallas)

Based on your requests, the listings in North Dallas are going to have a less urban feel. However, the traffic and local areas aren't exactly prime locations as of now.

What are the cross streets near your job? When I'm driving around, I never know if I'm in Garland, Richardson or Mesquite sometimes. They seem to mesh together in many areas.

If it's convenient, you might be able find something near Garland Rd/Buckner. There are a couple apt complexes west of Buckner near White Rock Lake - this would be in Dallas.

Or the new apts being built at Renner/Plano Rd - this is Richardson.

Stay away from apts near 635/LBJ Hwy especially near Skillman, Forest, Audelia.
