Older homes in desireable areas are selling equally well so its not that all new buyers are uninformed or obsessed.

Those schools get lots of airtime because they are located in areas that have many employers or are a reasonable commute to job centers. 2 of them also happen to be about 15 minutes from one of the busiest airports in the nation and AA's hub, DFW. The first question most frequently asked by responding posters is "what's the commute" if it is not addressed in the OP. Most OP say something like, "would love great public schools," so those school districts get brought up. I actually think people speak up for other districts alot and rightfully so. There are many great schools out there; much depends on the student's motivation.

I agree with most of what you say but better curriculum, experienced teachers and competitive peers influence most students, significantly. Most students aren't naturally gifted, focused and independent learners. Well, there is always one poor immigrant kid from Africa who rises up against all odds and gets full ride from all 8 Ivies but most kids aren't that exceptional. If one wants to take risk and hope for the best then sure, it's a personal decision. There are no guarantees that a kid would thrive in an intellectual enviornment so both sides are taking a gamble.

I met one of the very top students at Wylie East recently (valedictorian or close to it), doing college interviews... seemed like a great kid and a great student, but "by the numbers" would only have been in the top 10% or so at Plano. Didn't know about that other side of Wylie youth culture. Yikes.
