We are moving from Illinois to the Dallas area in the summer. We have four kids, one will be going to the North Hills School in Irving, I shall be looking for pre-k for my four year old twins but I am now looking for something for my 13 year old daughter who will be starting 8th grade in August. I am looking for good academics (of course) and my daughter is really interested in art and photography. Coppell High School looks to have a good Fine Arts program and the academics seem good also. I believe the school ranked 17th in the top high schools in Texas. However, reading the posts on the forum, some folk are saying that the school is not as good as it was and yet all the data I have found on the internet in terms of test scores and what the school offers seem to be saying the opposite. Just wondering if anyone is able to clarify things for me. Thanks !

I can't provide first-hand experience with the school, but everything I have heard about Coppell schools has been good.

One thing to note - I don't know how one child would go to North Hills (Irving ISD) and the other would go to Coppell High (Coppell ISD). I assume you would have to transfer, but I don't know how easy that is to do. Also, do you know that North Hills is a magnet? Your child would have to enter the lottery system (?) to gain admission.

Coppell has an excellent school district in my professional and personal opinion. Another district with a good high school program is Southlake, the district is called Carroll.

Coppell High was ranked 'academically unacceptable' last year - they appealed it and won. So maybe that's what you heard...

The school was rated academically unacceptable for the school year of 2005-2006. However, it claimed there were errors in the ranking, and appealed it. The appeal was successful, and Coppell High School regained its academically acceptable status. For the 2006-2007 school year, the school was ranked as Recognized.

It was also a Blue Ribbon school in 2001-2002 and they are working very hard at achieving that again.

Thanks all. My son already has a place in North Hills starting in August. There is no need to transfer as the school is a charter, not a magnet. I am interested in Coppell for my daughter as I will have to drive my son to school (there are no buses) so I figured the commute wouldn't be too bad. I know of Southlake schools but I don't want to commute from Southlake to Irving every day as I had been told that could be quite a commute. Would it still be a bad commute from Grapevine/Colleyville as I know their schools also have a good reputation?

While I'm not from Coppell, I have heard that they are a great school district. All of the upper-middle class suburbs of Dallas (Southlake, Plano, Frisco, Allen, Coppell, etc.) have great school districts.
