We (myself, my wife and our 5 yrs old daughter) are visiting Dallas this weekend and will be in Dallas till Tuesday, week after. I just came to know about this Forum and website today and hence couldn't spend more time reading other posts and I am sure others must have asked same questions before. We have plan to settle in Dallas in coming months. We are coming Chicago northwest suburbs. Me and my wife both are IT professionals. We are plannng to rent for first 6 months and then buy a good house. If some members can guide us on the good school districts and where we can rent in those good school districts. One of the area we can thought about is Plano, TX. But we are open for suggestions. We are thinking to rent 2-3 BR apt/townhome for first 6 months. Thanks for everybody's valuable feedback.

Nick.

not very good public transport in DFW area as in Chicago with the rail/train/bus system...Dallas better but area between Dallas and FTW where there are good towns and schools--no public transport--
if you don't have a job now, you need to pick a central location close to freeways--maybe the George Bush and rent -- find a job and then decide on a house...
no one in this area thinks freeway commute is the way to live--everyone wants to live within 30 min drive time of their jobs...that is hard to do if you live in Plano or Frisco and work in Lewisville, Las colinas, or downtown Dallas
or if you work in Plano and live in Colleyville...

It seems to me that a lot of IT people work in Richardson, Plano and Irving. Do you have jobs yet?

We do not have jobs yet. My wife is in .Net and I am in SAP. Finding job would not be difficult at all for us. There are soooo many opps out there for both the fields. My wife was browsing web and she found 20+ opps in Plano itself where she can very easily fit-in. I will be little different in the sense that either I will be in Dallas downtown or I will be travelling out-side Dallas Monday to Friday. So basically this is our situation. So, as I have wrote, at least one of the two (mostly my wife) will prefer to be nearer to her school so that she can take care of our daughter.

How much is the drive time from Plano to Dallas downtown..? Thanks in advance.

Well, Plano is pretty big. You can get to downtown on good days at rush hour from the southern portion of Plano in 40-50 minutes. If you are up near Allen and Frisco probably 50-60 minutes during rush hour. Two ways to get there (1) the tollway which costs $$$ and runs along the western side of Plano and (2) Hwy 75/Central Expressway which is free and runs more on the eastern side of Plano. Both end up downtown.

If you are going to live in Plano I would actively look for jobs near there and only do downtown as a last resort - just to retain your sanity and not take away 2 more hours a day from the family.

Plano is a pretty safe bet. You'll have no problem finding a SAP job here... my wife does SAP Security and is always bombarded with recruiters. You're not limited to just downtown, there are SAP jobs in Plano, Irving, Richardson, and Rockwall.

What type of SAP work do you do? Are you functional or technical? I'm pretty sure that my company has a few open positions.
