I think we usually do an annual thread when the appraisals come out this time of year, so I figured I would start this one so we can all commiserate together.

Post your county and city, and the percentage of increase (I'm assuming we won't have many decreases).

Denton/Frisco - went up 9.1%

ETA: It beats the 11% it went up last year.

Ack. That reminded me to look up my grandparent's home in central Plano. Up a whopping 27%.

What's the process for protesting? My grandmother's house is already appraised higher than I believe its worth (She hasn't taken great care of it as she's gotten old/frail), and I bet it goes up a lot this year. I know I can give DCAD my reasoning, but would it be worth it to hire an independent appraiser to do a report?

You can protest online once they are posted. They will also send your appraisal in the mail and you can protest that way, too. There are usually a variety of reasons that you can protest, like appraised value too high or unequal to other properties.

I've known a few people in the past that had homes needing work that brought estimates to the CAD office showing how much work the home needed. I don't know if this was successful or not.

As to whether to hire someone or not, it's up to you. I've always protested our taxes myself (4 of the last 5 years, I think) and I've gotten them to lower it every single time. It usually takes a few hours of research on my part and then taking a couple hours off of work to go to the CAD office. I have a flexible job, so it's easy for me to do this. I understand that some people don't have that luxury, though.
