Ok. This has become a routine in our community. Second time in few months, some random guy pulls up his SUV in our drive way and offers to fix our car for cheap. I have an SUV and a sedan, both parked outside garage. I wonder how they know it needs repair, my SUV has some minor dents, paint scratch not quite visible. This is the second time a guy offering to fix it.

Last time, I was at work and the person approached my wife. He claims he has no cell phone or business card, but offered to fix it right away. Today, happened just 5 minutes ago. Same offer, he wants to fix the suv. I said don't worry about it. On his way back, he saw my sedan, offered to buy it. It's an old one, I didn't have any plans to sell it. But I wanted to know what his offer was. He asked the mileage and model and asked how much I want. I doubled the amount I knew it worth. He said 'huh' and offered again to fix my SUV and left.

I am kind of concerned now. Who knows what their intentions are? May be just trying to get an idea about the surroundings, people etc. and who knows when they gona come back and do what.

Should I report it to the HOA or the cops? We have 'neighborhood watch' sign boards in our community.
Can I put a 'no soliciting' board to avoid these kind of people? I don't want some random stranger pull in his full size SUV in my private property.

That's exactly what I thought too. But how do they dare to go knock on people's houses on a Sunday afternoon. There were plenty of vehicles parked on the street, neighbor's house etc. They know it's a crowded area and still go play these tricks? Should I call 911 next time?

THIS. If your neighborhood uses the "Next Door" listserve or runs it's own listserve, I would pass on the info to make your neighbors aware. Also may want to let your local PD know in case they are already working on this person's case.

If they ring your doorbell, say "no thanks" and don't open the door but definitely let them know someone is home.

They sweep through my parents neighborhood, been doing so for years and years. My Dad called them gypsies, they especially prey on older folks. I'd let the cops know they are in the area and I'd alert the HOA. I see no reason not to post a no soliciting sign too. Those guys are bad news.

I would hang a visible non soliciting sign and call 911 if they rang my bell. Where do you live?

That's what I plan on doing. I live in garland, in an older neighborhood.

Yup, Gypsies. It's what they do. Don't be surprised if you get some who approach you to re-asphalt your driveway.

Delay them if they come by again, cook up a story about spouse on way home and he or she have to decide. Then call the cops. Need to get these criminal out of business before they sucker some one it to it.

All I can do is repeat what has already been said. Tell them to wait at the curb because you have to call your spouse. Call 911. Keep the door locked!
