I'm relocating to Dallas from northern CA, and I'll be working in Grand Prairie. My husband is considering positions in Plano and Richardson. What is a good place to live, so that our commute times will be around 30 min or less? We are willing to rent first but would like to buy a home within a year in the $300-$400K range.

Our priorities for location are:
1) commute 30 min or less if possible
2) safe residential area with reasonably new housing (built in last 15 yrs)
3) some ethnic diversity, especially a variety of ethnic restaurants
4) good schools (planning to have children)
5) community with well-kept parks and biking/jogging trails

Thanks for any feedback.

An area meeting all the criteria, I think the Lakewood area of Dallas would be the best area I can think of. Depending where in Plano, your husband's commute will be slightly longer some days.

There are only a handful of single family homes that were built in the last 15 years, but they do exist. They have more 1/2 duplexes.
