Hoping to start a Plano vs. Frisco flame war... JUST KIDDING! Congrats to all of this year's grads and their families.

I saw a Fort Lewis College on there -- just heard about that from our neighbor -- sounds like a wonderful college...

Half a dozen Val/Sal from every school. It would be nice if all schools start Latin honors/summa cuum laude instead of only recognizing 2 students. Usually top 10 students go neck to neck until someone drops choir and becomes office aid to inflate the GPA. This system only works if you know how to play the GPA's price is right game.

Ya got that right.

At Plano Senior, there are two kids who will be attending MIT and Caltech, respectively. But they aren't your val/sal, since there are no engineering AP classes, and the scientific research class is only honors (not AP).
To become val, they would have had to instead do a double-block AP art class, and leave one hour open to slightly increase the GPA impact of each previous AP course.

^^^That.

Really, nobody gives a horse's posterior if you are Val/Sal or top whatever once you've been accepted to a college. Nobody cares about your high school class rank AT ALL after...what, one year of college? Nobody cares about your college GPA (other than generally noticing if you graduated with honors of some sort) after a few months in the post-graduation working world, and almost nobody cares what schools you went to at all after maybe 5 years or so working.

That said, if someone is driven/dedicated/intelligent/etc. enough to do very well in high school and get accepted to a top notch college/university, odds are they'll do pretty well in life because of that level of skill and the ability to leverage the most out of it. But above a certain level, it doesn't matter if your GPA is 4.878 or 4.623 or whatever, and especially given the fact that GPA's over a certain level require (as pointed out) creative scheduling rather than just "straight A's", it's even less of an indicator of one's abilities.

Nothing against the kids who do get Val/Sal - they're obviously smart and disciplined and all that. But being #1 or #2 rather than #7 or maybe even #17 is a lot more about how classes fall into place than ability. Work hard, keep learning, find something you truly enjoy devoting your time and energies to and stay disciplined in your pursuits and you'll probably kick bu...uh..."buns" in life.

At Jasper all the overachievers know that AP Art is GPA deathstar and try to avoid it like the plague. Of course my daughter couldn't resist so she was always up late working on the darn art projects half the nights. By sophomore year most realize they have to kick the habit for sanity sake because of the insane workloads.

Oh, and of course Jasper is Asian central for top Dallas area schools. Especially AP Art.
