Hello,
My wife and I are relocating to the Dallas area. I will be working downtown but don't mind a commute. My son graduated high school, so we aren't too worried about school districts. I would like to find an acre or so that we can move a trailer to and build a house. Or an acre that all already has a trailer on it or a small house.

Also, We will probably rent an apartment for a few months initially and have two cats. Any suggestions there would be great too.

Thanks,
James

I would concentrate on looking to the East or South of Dallas if you want to live in the country but commute to downtown. There are country areas to the North but you'd have to go through way too many of the suburbs to get to Dallas and the traffic would be much worse.

I'd try looking at places like Forney, Terrell, Crandall, Ferris, Waxahachie, and Midlothian. They're all reasonably close to Dallas but with a more country atmosphere and land available outside the core town areas.

Definitely look east and south. Forney, Terrell, Kaufman in the east. Desoto, Red Oak, Waxahachie, Ferris, Palmer, Midlothian, Cedar Hill in the South.

What is your budget?

I'm just going to second the above two posters. Most of those will be about a 30 minute to hour long commute in the morning and there is plenty of property with an acre or more in those areas for a reasonable cost. Good luck OP and welcome to DFW!

Don't try to buy a used trailer unless you plan on paying cash. They are notoriously difficult to finance. Also, trailers depreciate like a car, so they are an awful investment. Personally, I'd look for a small house instead.

I agree. I would also add Glenn Heights, Ovilla, Lancaster, and the unincorporated portion of Dallas County (S/E of Lancaster, N of Red Oak, & NW of Ferris) to the list of areas south of Dallas. Ennis might be an option too.
