First off, I bet this isn't unique to Dallas but I am seesawing between feeling kind of like a jerk and feeling justified.

Location: I-30, service road heading west after entering on Singleton/Inwood time 4:30pm, Wednesday

Sooooo......rush hour is breathing on my back, I-30 is moving but crowded, and I am trying to get a few miles ahead of traffic westbound out of Dallas and toward FTW. Its 99 degrees outside, the sun is angling towards the west (car sunshield down) there is a looooong line of vehicles trying to move forward towards the freeway entrance beyond the intersection and we are stopped at the traffic light.

When the light changes to green, and we start to move forward, a car comes to a full stop and the driver engages with the panhandler standing at the curb. The driver is fishing around in the car and produces an umbrella and hands it to the guy. No, that's not enough! Time for more conversation and more fishing (I think for money). So, I'm the jerk who blasted my horn. Panhandler gets upset and starts screaming and waving in my direction!

Was I a jerk?

Panhandling is illegal. I don't think you were a jerk.

Don't feel guilty. You are human. Traffic can bring the worst in best of us. I am against encouraging this behavior, there are other ways to help needy. We shouldn't encourage them to knock at private homes or disrupt traffic. I've seen these things get out of hand in other countries.

There is a jerk but it's not you. Cars stopping in rush hour when they have a green light is jerky. I waiver between it being the panhandler and the guy who stopped.

Panhandling is illegal and so is blocking traffic in the roadway. Both should be ticketed.
