Hello everyone,

My husband job is relocationg to Addison, we would like to get some information about Mckinney, Richardson, Carrollton Texas, which area is pretty diverse? We are a african american middle class family looking for great high school and middle school in an suburban area. I am a license cosmetoligist, looking for a diverse salon. If not i am looking for african american upscale salon. I'm also looking for schools , houses, salons in the same area,I am not big on commuting.

All three of these communities are diverse but I would think that Richardson or Carrollton would fit your criteria the best. I hear Richardson is on the rise of coming back as far as desirable area to live and work. As for schools you couldn't really go wrong in any of these areas. Just like most districts you have some schools that are better than others. I would go to each of the school district web sites. You can learn a great deal from their sites. Carrollton feeds into the area near Valley Ranch and Las Colinas as both border on Coppell School district as well. You might find the need for cosmetologist in that area as these areas are very diverse and seem to be what you may be looking at as for career. Good luck in your search.

Did you see this other post I wrote awhile back - demographics of 25 biggest school districts. You really have to look at specific schools within a district, but it might give you an idea.

I'm going to put my plug in for Carrollton. We moved here 7 months ago and like it. The city is great for families. Not much nightlife, bars, etc. Lots of great Community education offerings through the city. Diverse housing, schools (Newman Smith gets a bad rap sometimes, but they have a wonderful Science program, which tells me they have to have a good Math program as well). The schools really do a good job...considering they have students that can't speak English they are expected to have wonderful TAKS standards (a common Texas problem).

The people are very friendly and include backgrounds of all socioeconomic classes. If you move to Carrollton, I do not recommend moving south of Beltline and also to stay away from living on Josey Ln whether north or south Josey.

Good luck with your move.

75007, 75287, 75010 are two that come to mind. 75287 is actually part of Dallas city limits but in Carrollton Schools and Denton County for the most part.

I highly recommend you check out Allen, which is just south of McKinney and north of Richardson. Zip code 75013. Great diversity, excellent schools!

See //www.city-data.com/forum/dalla...der-allen.html for more details.

Good luck!

I think Carrollton is fine as far as a central location, but I know a few people that live there and they worry alot about the increasing crime and the fact that it's very hard to sell your home. BUT....if you drive through the area, it looks just fine. I actually like my friends houses that live there...the school system in that area is challenged as well.

I work in Richardson, and unfortunately crime seems to be creeping into that area as well (we get a newsletter at work that warns us about the crime that is occuring in the Richardson area, and it's surprising). But then again, some of my favorite areas in the metroplex are in Richardson as well...take a look at an area called Canyon Creek. Richardson is just a mixed bag, so you need to be careful when buying there.

Mckinney would be my personal choice of those areas, but it's a hike on the 75. Even though the miles look reasonable on a map, that commute is tough. Allen and Central Plano would probably be areas you should look as well - nice tradeoff. Fairview is another spot that I really like that's just south of Mckinney and North of Allen.

Yes, carrollton has had increasing crime but and certain parts of the town xswq1are not desirable. The housing market in the areas where we are looking to buy (we are new to town) have the houses moving quickly and the sellers aren't really willing to drop their prices much. The population is very diverse with a large Hispanic, Asian population and there are low as well as high income houses available.
As to the schools - I'm not sure why your impression is that they are challenged. CFBISD has many exemplary schools and one of the best gifted programs in the Metroplex. Certain schools do have transient populations of students and some of them do have lower ratings but that is easy to look up online. We found the district to be extremely helpful in our entry into the school system and, in my opinion, the schools do an excellent job acommodating the needs of the diverse population that they serve. If you think your child might need a good gifted program this is an excellent choice.
