Hi

We are thinking about relocating from North California to Van Alstyne Texas. Does anyone know anything about this town they would like to share? (good or bad) The housing prices are unbeatable and the schools seem excellent. Its a small town 15 min south or Sherman and 15 min north of McKinney.

Van Alstyne is a small town yes, nothing much happening there. If you like the seclusion. There are a lot of manufactured homes there too.

I have lived in Van Alstyne for eleven years now, and I could probably tell you all of the juicy gossip that goes on here, tell you the good things, and the bad things.

As for the schools. . .complete lies. The elementary school is excellent, the teachers actually care about the students (most of the teachers at least) and Mrs. Rhouton (Sp?) is a highly commended music teacher there.

The middle school is OK, but half of teachers don't care if you fail or pass. Luckily I am a straight A student and in honors classes, so I was safe from their wrath, but the teachers are of poor quality most indefinitely.

The high school. . . . Mr. Martin, an excellent Latin teacher, and a few others are the only teachers are the only one's who truly care about the students and their work. Mr. Goodwin, was a tough but very good math teacher, but unfortunately he retired last year.

However, in all three schools, the teachers are not really good at making sure the bullying is kept to a minimum. Several harassment complaints are given, but the staff refuses to help. Students are constantly being beaten up, and called names in front of them, but that is the one thing they don't make sure does not happen.

--------------------------------

As for the town itself, during the several years that I have lived there, I have watched it grow from the little hick town with a Dairy Queen (A very bad one, might I add. Needless to say, business did not go well for them.), Diamonds (a grocery store. . It is worth the drive to Sherman for Walmart) and one gas station. Now, we have at least four gas stations, a McDonalds, Burger King, Subway, two pizza places, farmers market, and two bars.

While the town is still rather small, it can be beautiful at times. The winters are cold, only we don't get snow. I have seen it twice in my life. The summers are atrocious, terribly humid.

Mostly farm land, a short drive through the back roads will allow you to see a countless amount of farms and animals. Mostly horses and cows, of course.

The fire department is excellent, the police. . . not very intelligent.
--------------------------

Well, that is really all I can think of what to say. I hope I was of some help.

Based on OP's other posts, they are either moving to Austin or already moved to Austin.

Default Van Alstyne

[quote=Momof3OK;2660795]Hi

We are also try to relocate from New Jersey to Texas. I have done some research on VanAlstyne. I agree about the unbeatable prices, but keep in mind that it is a LONG drive to get work, and highway 75 and 121 are a complete nightmare for traffic. Try to find a town that has multiple roads going towards the city of dallas so your commute to work isn't stressful.
I have been doing homework on the entire metroplex for four years now, and I am still not sure of the perfect spot.

We have lived in Van Alstyne, but not in town, for 6 years, and we love it! We are north of town in the county, close to Sherman for shopping and entertainment. Our kids are grown and live in Plano, Richardson, Frisco, and Dallas, so our place is a weekend retreat for them and their families. Unlike living in cities, we can see a plethora of stars on a clear night! Cardinals, hummingbirds, robins, and other beautiful birds flock to our feeders. My husband still works in Plano and says the commute is easy and un-stressful down I-75 compared to living in traffic where it takes just as long to travel a shorter distance! I can't say enough about living here. For us, it is paradise on earth.

Hi there. A belated welcome to Texas. We are looking to retire to the Van Alystine area from the Austin area because we have grandkids moving there. Cheers!
