Does anybody know a shortcut from Dallas near Preston Center (Northwest Highway/Tollway) to Grapevine/Southlake (near the Southlake Town Square) ? It is hard to find this on google maps etc.

You can take NW Hwy all the way west until it runs into 114.

That's the best alternative to 635. There are only a few ways around DFW Airport, so that's what limits your options.

I work in the Preston Center area and commute to North Richland Hills .. though I'm heading further south than you, in the years I've done this, I'd had to find a few work-arounds. When the weather is bad/icy, I have gone north to Royal Lane and west, then worked my way south .. it's not a short-cut but to avoid a closed or icy freeway.

I use 183 and Spur 482 as my usual route. If 183 is bad on the way home, I'll take the 114/Loop 12 exit off of 482, stay on the service road, take t he first left, first right, right again and circle around to University of Dallas (Texas Plaza Drive, to Tom Brannif Drive to E Northgate Ave. I follow Northgate to Beltline or Valley View, hit Walnut Hill to South Airfield Drive and cross the airport. From there I cross 360 and 121 .. it actually isn't much longer to get home, and much less stress than a too-crammed or under-construction freeway.

Lucky me, I moved there just before the major 183 construction in the Mid-Cities, and now that it's done, the eastern part is beginning. :-)

Have you tried the new texpress toll lanes on 635 both east and west? It cuts off considerable time for me as I take a similar route -- just not as far west as Southlake.
