I'm planning on moving to the area and have a few minor necessities, first, I know FIOS is available in Dallas and Tarrant counties as well as the 2 norther counties but those are too far north from the cities, so now my next step for narrowing down locations to rent is commute

I probably will try to get a place near Arlington for an even commute time depending on different job opportunities across the area unless anyone can verify that going between DAL and FW is really just about 30 minutes.

Google Maps has 3 main routes and they're all about 10 minutes within each other in terms of arrival times, but how realistic are those, do any of them get packed during certain times of day, or constantly under construction?

1) It's impossible to tell you which route to take without you giving us at least a general point A and B. Generally 183 has a lot of airport traffic coming from both directions. I doubt many people from Arlington use it because it's north of them and 360 is almost always a disaster traffic wise. I-30 is the shortest distance from Downtown Fort Worth to Downtown Dallas but may not make sense depending on where you're coming from. I-30 also backs up a lot between Collins and 360. And also in Downtown Dallas sometimes starting at Hampton RD. I-20 is way south, I rarely use it, it seems to have the most 18 wheelers of all the highways.

2) Google is not accurate. Door to door I would factor 2-3 minutes a mile during rush hour.

3) Fios is not available everywhere.

4) Find a job BEFORE moving here. It will make life a lot easier.

WHERE in Dallas to WHERE in Fort Worth? That's going to make a big difference in which highway to take.

Yes, ALL freeways in DFW are busy during rush hour. No, 30 minutes is not a realistic commute time in traffic.

Arlington is in between downtown Dallas and downtown Fort Worth, but it's not centrally located within the DFW area. If you get a job in Plano, the commute from Arlington to Plano is going to be awful.

Honestly, you need to find a job before you move, and definitely before you sign an apartment lease.

2-3 min per mile, as Ronnie ssid, is the standard for rush hour traffic.

I generally agree with the other posters.

However, the commute from dallas to fw in the morning and back in the afternoon is quicker than the rule of thumb the others offered. Downtown dallas to downtown fort worth is approximately 33 miles and usually takes 35-40 min in the morning rush hour. Downtown fw to downtown dallas usually takes 40-45 min in the afternoon rush hour, on I-30. The traffic in the opposite direction is usually much worse.

Also, FiOS is not available everywhere (and will be Frontier next summer). Most of Dallas proper is AT&T or Time Warner.
