Allen ISD recently announced they are opening the Gifted and Talented Education Academy (GATE) in the fall. It will be for grades 1-5 the first year, then add 6th the following year. They are also going to keep the current gifted programs in the other elementary schools. There will be a lottery and only 225 students will be accepted the first year. I can't decide if I should apply for my daughter who will be in 5th grade when the academy opens. I'm not sure if my daughter would want to leave her school and friends going into fifth grade either. Do any of you have experience with separate academies in other districts? What are your thoughts on the pros/cons?

Gifted lottery is an oxymoron, anyways if your kid is in 5th grade then it's not a good time to move her for a new experiment.

Just to clarify, only those who are currently in the gifted program may apply. Then there is a lottery, because there are more than 225 eligble to apply.

On second thought these kids may have more opportunities available then ones in regular schools and as a parent in Allen ISD, probably you know that regular schools aren't doing that well so may be you should try for the academy, see if she gets in and then decide.

By what measure are they not doing that well? Nevermind, I recall you bashing Allen ISD before. The elementary school my kids attend is excellent and there are no problems.

Don't take my words, just compare Allen High's performance with any of the top performing schools before dismissing this idea.

CFB ISD runs such a program, called LEAP. I haven't seen any discussion of it in recent years, but there should be quite a few earlier threads on the topic. We even had a resident poster (who's since faded away) with a kid in the program.

FWIW, in your shoes, with that timing, I would stay with what you've got.

Go for it!!!!
One of my kids was in a G/T magnet from K-12
The other from 6-12

Wonderful opportunities, classes with kids that are on the same levels so the teachers can teach to the class as a whole, etc.
There really are a lot of advantages to going the G/T route if the student qualifies.

It's a good idea if you have gifted children. How's it going to affect rest of the student body, if you move gifted students to separate schools. I'm sure that there are pros and cons but wondering if and how it effects natural echo system as most experts oppose even putting special needs students in separate schools.
