We are relocating to the Dallas/Plano area for a couple years and I am finding that there are an extraordinary number of scams on Craigslist. I have always used Craigslist to find rentals for other areas and have never run into this issue. Between all the scams for homes and the plethora of poorly constructed apartments, I am at a loss. With that, other than Zillow, what is the best way to go about finding a home to rent there? And if you happen to know of any townhomes/apartments that are better (clean and quiet) than others that would be greatly appreciated. Any tips and/or recommendations would be a tremendous help.

Find a realtor that specializes in the part of town you want to rent in. I don't know whether you'll get a good deal, but it isn't likely to be a scam.

You can try padmapper but it pulls from several sites including craigslist so caveat emptor.

There is a huge shortage of rentals, they pay very little for the work involved and many Realtors will no longer mess with a lease.

They may be able to find a Newbie who has no business who will do it as a learning experience.

I am a landlord and I refuse to cooperate with Realtors because I don't need to pay them commission to fill vacancies. I advertise on Trulia and Zillow. However since you want an apartment, you might consider using an apartment locator. Where is the work location and what are your specific needs as far as schools, budget, etc. Can't make recommendations without more info.
