Frisco Isd just newly started teaching Humanities in their schools, was wondering if anybody's kids are in the program and how well do the teachers teach or how experienced are they teaching the program.

I was in PISD's talented and gifted program (which is basically their smartest students) decades ago with humanities. It was honestly a waste, and as a parent I oppose having humanities = talented and gifted.

Like seriously, who cares about the type of art painting movements centuries ago? Who cares about writing a paper on a musical? I would much rather have STEM programs in place

//EDIT: So sad, I actually just googled and found this for FISD - http://www.friscoisd.org/docs/defaul...a-feb-2016.pdf
Seems like decades later, nothing has changed. Talented and gifted = humanities + history. This is so disappointing

why do they have to be opposing?

I think this is fantastic - I wish that my oldest wasn't already about to graduate and could benefit from the new Humanities courses offered!

Frisco ISD has already a STEM program in place.

Plano ISD has humanities for gifted students but they do have other programs like PACE, Math Rock, honors maths, honors science, STEM, International Baccalaureate, Health Concentration, Advance Placement and research.

This way parents and teachers can help students custom tailor a path that interests them, suits their strengths and strengthens their weakness. PISD has many ways to monitor academic and intellectual progress like COGAT, MAP, EXPLORE, PLAN, PSAT etc.

Well, that escalated quickly.

---

My kid went through the two-year humanities sequence in PISD (which FISD appears to be closely replicating).

That extended course has been, hands-down, the best educational experience he received in PISD. It also was extremely beneficial in terms of giving him the skill set for success in later courses.

In particular, the heavy emphasis on scholarly writing has served him well during the college application process and will continue to serve him well once in college.

I can't comment as to FISD's implementation. But if it's anything like how PISD runs it, go for it!

It's not really a program - it's just a list of classes that are STEM-related and recommended to take for STEM "endorsement". No different from a regular person just wanting to take those courses.

I 100% diagree!!!

I am speaking not as a parent, but as an actual person who went through it not too long ago. I am speaking from a 1st hand perspective, not a 3rd. My entire family went through the 2 year humanities "gifted and talented" program. It is useless. 0 benefit, especially towards the "scholarly writing" part

Thanks for your replies. We've heard great things about Plano's Humanities program and it has also got excellent reviews. Even the kids in Plano that we have spoken to like Humanities alot. The teachers and the number of years of experience they have teaching the program has definitely contributed to its success, but we are in Frisco Isd I and I was wondering if anybody's child has experienced the Humanities here especially in Liberty HS and what was their feedback on the way it is taught.

I also am a recent alum of humanities, and it was an incredible educational experience.

Studying the history of art, literature, music, and thought grows us as individuals. In learning about the great ideas that have shaped our world, I've gained a better sense of who I am, where I'm coming from, and how I relate to the world around me. A solid humanities education (both in high school and college) enriched my inner life in the most wonderful way, and I would hate for other inquiring young minds to be deprived of that opportunity.

Not to mention that it's proved incredibly useful, whether in traveling the world or in my courses at Stanford. But I would hope that "gifted and talented" students would see the intrinsic value of that education.

I wish FISD all the best with their new program - it would be wonderful if it works out.
