Hello,

I was just offered a job at GM Financial in Arlington. I'm relocating from Memphis and I wanted to live in the Frisco, West Plano area. I have two girls 14 & 7 and from researching the schools and areas thats where my heart was set. Soooo this job is in Arlington, but how bad of a commute is that? Is it feasible? Or do I need to consider living in another area? I really love that are of North Dallas though! Help Please!!!

That will be a long drive. For good schools near Arlington, I suggest you look into Southlake, Coppell, Flower Mound.

What's your budget?

That's a horrible commute. Not feasible at all.

Based on where the GM Financial office is (South Arlington), you might be looking at Arlington, Fort Worth, or Mansfield as places to live with reasonable commutes.

That would be fully brutal. I wouldn't consider that drive. There are all manner of nice towns with solid school districts closer to that job.

if you are working in arlington, why bother to live in frisco. Keller, Coppell, flower mound, grapevine are places worth to consider. A decent sfh will cost you over 350k. If you have a budget over 450k, you might be able to buy a house in colleyville or southlake.

This is all solid advice. Frisco to Arlington is easily a $10+/day toll road commute that is going to consume about 3 of your non-work, non-sleep hours each day. Why live in Frisco if you can't enjoy it? Why spend 15 hours a week driving instead of with your family? There are so many other great suburbs with strong public schools, great amenities, and family friendly vibes that are much closer to Arlington.

OP is in exactly the situation we warn relos about. DFW's land mass covers about 60% of the state of Connecticut's land. You don't realize how big DFW is until you drive clear across it during rush hour. Don't ever fall in love with one specific neighborhood or suburb until you have your job offer in hand. It just creates disappointment during what should be an exciting time,

I wouldn't advise it for a daily commute.

I wasn't quite sure how bad the commute would be. Thanks for the advice! So where is somewhere just as nice as Frisco with good public schools? I'm looking to rent for the first year, I've been looking at town homes and houses to rent with a price range of $1500-1700 for 3bed/2bath. I dont know all of the suburbs of Dallas, Frisco and West Plano off of Preston was an area I really liked and didn't give me that city feel nor a country feel. So I'm opened to other places that offer some of the same amenities. Suggestions??

That's a nasty one. It will be like 50-55 miles each way! So putting 100 miles in the car every day and $$ in tolls. I know someone who commutes from Arlington to north Dallas but he has flexible hours and can work from home several days a week so it's more manageable.
