Greetings, I am relocating to Dallas and looking for an apartment. I am in tech and the new job will be close to world trade center. My commute is only during off-peak hours (hopefully within 20 mins)
  • 1br apartment for just myself (ok to use the other for office as long as it has only 1 ba)
  • budget $1250 max
  • relatively quite (gated/enclosed preferred, would not want to park my car on the street at night), not crowded place, low crime
  • preferably a spacious apartment (800sqft+) with some home office space (den), open floor plan preferred
  • built after 2000, no more than 3 stories

So far areas I have been looking at
  • south of Love Field
  • Highland park to I635, Addison
  • Richardson (is it really as safe as it appears in the statistics?)

Are my expectations realistic? Thanks

Try the Medical District area or the Design District. Lots of professionals, fairly quiet (more so in the Med District) and an easy commute to the WTC.

For $1250, you'll probably have more luck securing an 800 sq ft apartment in the Medical District, though.

Are you implying I should expect to pay a higher price? coming from Austin I am paying around the same price for 1000sqft.
20 mins off-peak commute is by car. Thanks. I will check out the medical district (S of Love Field)

The Design District is right there and has newer apartments.

And for $1200/mo, OP should be able to find a nice place to live. My coworker lives in Bell apartments in the Design District. He said his rent is around $1200 for a 1br.

Yes. I was saying that you'll probably have to pay a little more than that for a large (800+ sq ft) apartment in the Design District. The Med District should be cheaper.

At Bell Design District, a 1 bedroom, 800-821 sq ft apartment rents for $1300+. If you're fine having something smaller than that you'll be able to find a nice apartment pretty easily. I would google the other properties in the area.

Thanks. I would prefer living some distance away from downtown (noise, crime etc). After spending quite some years in the countryside I can't see myself living next to an interstate and park my car on the street Design district seems still a bit too urban for me. I need to pretty confident that packages can be left at front door without getting stolen.

Going through several sources (craigslist/apartments.com), it looks like there are plenty of lists in North Dallas (Carrollton/Addison/Richardson) in my price range. Some are house/townhouse/condo. Are they legit? A lot are posted by realtor/apartment locating services

Las Colinas would be closer than Richardson, and you could have the option of taking the DART rail from there. There is a nice walking path around Lake Carolyn, a very good trail at Campion Trail and a growing entertainment district. My DH used to drive from a bit west of there into downtown in rush hour and it took him 30 min. Your drive should be about 20.

many of the surrounding apartment complexes are very nice

Probably no place is safe to leave a package on the porch.
My 1st thought is Medical District or Design District...
Pretty close...
I'm thinking most apartments will have gated covered parking....not street parking.
While crime might be an issue in some of the areas, hail is the real issue why you don't want to park outside.

There are things like Amazon locker to keep the packages safe.
If you get a lot of packages you should also ask the apartment if they will keep or hold them for you...how they let you know...how you pick them up...like what hours...and if they charge.
Lots of changes in this area now due to volume of packages.....some won't do it....
You might also think of renting a private condo with a concierge who holds the packages.
A couple of buildings come to mind in this arena.

You might check out the Deep Ellum or Farmer's Market areas. This is a great area for techies. High density of tech and design companies, as well as some of the best restaurants and bars. Both are a 10 minute drive away from the World Trade Center.
