Hi there!

What's the best way to get rid of fire ants without spraying chemicals all over my yard (don't want to poison my dog!)? We are moving to McKinney soon and I'm not quite sure how to handle these little a$$holes that are in my yard. I saw a few of their piles when I was at the house over the weekend.

I'd hate for them to swarm on her.

Any suggestions?

I don't like to spray chemicals either. I've had good results with using Amdro granules
AMDRO® : Fire Ant Bait

Sprinkle that in the grass around the mound, the worker ants will bring the bait in and eventually feed it to the queen. I've ghosted many mounds using it. Only thing is it takes quite a few days for it to completely clear the mound.

Good for you thinking about the four legged family members!!

Home Depot used to sell 5 Lb. pails but you can also try feed stores.

Beneficial nematodes. Get them at the feed and seed.

They also kill fleas, ticks and grub worms.

We used white vinegar poured straight into the mounds for the 1st time this year. Worked great..certainly as good as Amdro that we've used in the past. Way cheaper too!

White vinegar, DE, nematodes and the even older horse-urine work but not for long. Amdro is very persistent.

The only "green" fire ant treatment that seems to really work well and for a long time is this from Howard Garrett.

Yes, nematodes only work as long as there is a good source. They will move to the neighbor's yard, once you run out of anta, fleas, grubs to munch on. But I love my visits to Roach's feed and sees each spring and have no problem putting out a new batch that may or may not find food in my yard for <$20

Thank you, everyone! We used some Bengal UltraDust Fire Ant Killer powder before we left this past weekend so I'm hoping it worked.

We will officially be there in just a couple of weeks so I will be doing lots of research in the meantime.

Thanks again!
