My husband and I will be relocating this summer to Dallas. We plan to rent for at least 1-2 years and are doing most of our searching online. We've visited once and think we would be most comfortable in the M-Street/Greenville or Lakewood area. Does anyone have any advice or warnings about renting in these places? I'm most concerned about reliable landlords and safety, and not being around too many college students.

Thanks!

Students are the least likely to be renting there. It's mostly relocated professionals and native Dallasites.

Boston doesn't really have anything like it. (Cambridge, Somerville and Newton don't easily compare to it. Brookline is probably the most similar to that section of Dallas--but without the stuffiness.)

It's considered nice, boring, historical, slightly bohemian, confidently unpretentious and understated. The riff-raff get noisier the closer you get to Greenville. Greenville Ave. is an alcohol soaked variation on Mass. Ave. and Harvard St.

Neither the M-Streets nor Lakewood have many college students, but nearby there are many at SMU (however the enrollment is nothing like the schools in Boston). You will find them usually going to places on the lowest part of Greenville near Ross and over on Henderson. There are many SMU faculty types around the area. Lakewood is a bit more family-oriented, but there is very little for rent east of Abrams. For a single family house, you will probably be dealing with an independent landlord or a very small property management firm. I've heard a lot of people from Boston say they really love our area.
