I would love to hear from people who made the move from California to Dallas Texas area. What was your experience? Are you happy with your choice? What advise would you give someone looking into making the same move? Areas to avoid? Areas recommended? Thanks!

We made the move from CA to TX.

I grew up in Southern California and lived in Northern California for about 15 years so I am familiar with both areas of CA that most people tend to be from. I also understand everything CA offers and I can tell you that moving to TX was one of the best decisions I have made in my life. I don't own guns and am not religious at all. I am fiscally conservative and socially liberal. I don't care who anyone marries. I think a woman should decide what to do with her body. I don't care what anyone relates to.

For us we considered San Antonio, Houston, and Dallas when we decided to move here. We threw out San Antonio because it was a little to TX for my wife. We threw out Houston due to it having the worst weather of the three and the worst traffic. I created this list before but I figured I would post it here about what I like better:

TX Cuisine which really means BBQ and steakhouses.
Low property taxes
Low income taxes
Better politics
Less socialism
Much much cleaner
Newer infrastructure
Nicer people
Much much more community feel where I live
Better traffic
World class airport
Well laid out freeway system
Central location in US
Much better facilities like hospitals, doctors offices, etc
Much better middle class options
Great job market not focused on one particular sector
Incredible schools in very affordable areas (when compared to other large metro areas)
Teachers can actually live in the communities they teach in
One's ability to live in a nice city (suburb) near where they work if they choose to do so
Fiscal conservative values
Emphasis placed on public schools in suburbs throughout DFW
Lack of natural disasters comparatively speaking (earthquake and hurricane specifically)
Great weather (Like the fall, spring, and winter here better than CA). Hate the summers comparatively speaking.

If you tell me what areas you like in CA then I can tell you what areas would be similar in the DFW area.

Nice list, but disagree with the above points. Property taxes are quite high here (around 2.5% in DFW) and they make up for the money you save in property taxes once you buy a house. Of course, the overall tax burden will be less here in TX than in CA though. But it'd be similar to most of the other states with state income tax.

Re: natural disasters, we do get our share of tornadoes. We had 2 houses burn down *within* our community in the past 2 years due to lightning.

Depending upon study methodologies Texas has between the 35 and 40 lowest overall tax burden of all states. Ergo your point about taxes simply isn't correct.

Source? I imagine it includes businesses and not just individual/family's tax burden.

No. I'm talking about individual overall state imposed tax burdens.
