Son wants an Iphone for Christmas, he has no phone and this is his first year of Middle School. Excellent grades, soccer, etc. Great kid.

What plan/company are folks using ?

Thank you

An iPhone for an 11 year old? Boy have times changed since I was in school (wasn't that long ago).

Have you considered getting a cheap prepaid phone?

Aside from this post not answering the question, I'm amazed at people judging others on this forum. OP did not ask if he should give his kid a cell phone or not.
Back to the topic. I recommend going through your carrier for phone and family plans options. For example we have 4 lines with AT&T. They have several entry level smart phones that are almost free including Android and older refurbished iPhones. There are many parental control apps that let us monitor and control their use. I also like their family locator service that lets me know the location of my kids at any given time.

Go with some type of family plan with control options like AT&T Smart Limits.

As for device I would personally give him a hand-me-down to start or buy a older iphone or android off swappa. That way you are not stuck in a contract if it gets lost or broken. If you do go with a new phone then insure the heck out of it.

For my son I use this plan : T-mobile pay-as-you-go
3 bucks a month, can't top that
I don't get him any data as he has free wifi at school and most places he goes to anyway

You will need a t-mobile phone or an unlocked phone though
