A couple of nice stories focusing on DISD and the magnets, but I'm sure that high school kids and parents and teachers everywhere are celebrating.

* DISD magnet school racks up Ivy League early admissions | WFAA.com
* DISD Seniors Receive Early Acceptance To Top Universities « CBS Dallas / Fort Worth

The profiles of the SEM kids are inspiring. It's nice to think that housing prices in nice neighborhoods aren't the final determinant of opportunities in higher ed.

A friend shared this year's list of early admits to Harvard. 15 admitted, 91 deferred to regular, unknown number rejected.

And those are:

3 - Science and Engineering Magnet (Townview)
3 - Highland Park
1 - Hebron (LISD)
1 - Independence (Frisco)
1 - Marcus (Flower Mound)
1 - Plano West
1 - Plano Senior
1 - Saint Mark’s
1 - TAG (Townview)
1 - TAMS
1 - Woodrow Wilson

for comparison, the same Harvard list last year was:

2 - Saint Mark’s
1 - Bullard High (Cherokee County)
1 - Cistercian
1 - Flower Mound
1 - Henderson High (Rusk County)
1 - Highland Park
1 - Hockaday
1 - Marcus
1 - Parish
1 - SEM (Townview)
1 - TAMS

Many of these kids are getting admitted in part due to they are from lower income background and thus getting full ride to top schools. They have done well even with the background they came from but not a pure merit based comparison.

^This. Dallas schools have more underprivileged students hence Ivies want them and they can go on financial aid. Ivy admission policy for affluent public school students is a cut throat competition and sadly contrary to popular believe most upper middle class families can't afford full pay at elite universities so they don't go for early admit. More wealthy families from private schools and Highland Park have advantage to apply without worrying about payments.

Harvard doesn't do binding early decision - just early action. Which is just one of the inaccurate statements made in your post.

That's great news! It's fantastic to learn about these children working hard, seeking out educational opportunities in higher ed and overcoming such adversity.
