jdallas has some great tech info on what to do. But what would you do? I doubt you'll do all this with a new house. I too am noise-sensitive and was the first on my block for years so lived without any next door AC units. Then when they built the house next door (with cheap products) I heard that AC buzzing all night. But after a few weeks I never noticed it again... Maybe the same for you?

One other comment, your builder could probably sell the house quickly and at a higher price if you walk. Its very common, with our small lots and need for continuous AC to have to live with one's own condenser on one side of the house and often the neighbor's condenser behind a fence on the other side. When I first moved to Plano in 1978 it was so eery to me, walking through our neighborhood and hearing the hum of condensers. It is, in the end, a common white noise one gets used to. Or, even playing soft music or running a ceiling fan in the room can help a lot.
