This was built by someone who had more money than taste.

Custom--that is, unique--design and build. Not semi-custom, fully unique.
Size in square feet--5,000 or more.
Size of lot--acre or more.

Might not be true for historical mansions in historical neighborhoods.

The front of the house is chaotic. Is there a front door? How do you get to it? Why isn't it visible? Why is there a faux garage door behind a flower bed?
The front door is in the cave on the far left. Not sure why there is a door that is behind a flower bed. My guess would be to make it look older and make that part look like an add-on, but who wouldn't cover up a garage door or turn it into a window, except someone who couldn't afford to?

Also the front is done in that two-stone color thing that is supposed to look old/like add-ons, but really just looks like the person who picked the stone was colorblind or worse, didn't care they don't match.

I have a cousin that lives in Europe full time who was unimpressed with the 'estates' tour i took her on in HP and PH to show her how like Dallas-the-show it was not. I imagine after living around actual European castles everything else seems like an imitation.

Its all about the vantage point of the beholder.
Yep, I agree. My European-born husband is the same way. His parents visited, and they wanted to see Dallas. So he took them down to HP/UP area, and they were like, "Meh. It's prettier at home." Well, DUH.

Taste is personal. I personally like the older homes around Dallas. They have character.

As far as the mansion vs mcmansion thing goes, there's a fine line where quality and size come together.

In that case, any work is usually under the review of a preservation/historical society

Goodness...just...WHY?

Where in the world is Hickory Creek anyway? If it was someplace worth traveling to it might make for a nice boutique hotel. One you rent for events.

But as a home???

That's an older article... the house was last listed for "only" $17.5 million. I don't think it sold, even at that lower price.

Pretty much the way I see, too.
