I am relocating to Dallas in April. I will be living in Rowlett with a friend, but I will have to rely on public transportation to get around (for entertainment, job search, etc.). I'm sure it's not comparable to Chicago's, but how is the public transportation in Dallas? Is this a good place to live if you have no car?

Rowlett is an outer suburb of Dallas. You'll need a car to live there. It's no different than the outer, car-oriented suburbs of any other major US metro. If you want to minimize the need for a car, you should live in a central Dallas neighborhood such as Downtown, State-Thomas, West Village, LoMac, or in close walking distance to a DART metro station.

To my knowledge there are only two buses that run out to Rowlett. One is a park ride that makes one stop at the Garland Transit center and then goes directly Downtown. I am not sure about the other but Dallas public transportation is nothing like Chicagos. You just about have to have a car to get around town.

Well, that last comment is unfair and unrealistic. Chicago's version of Rowlett wouldn't be any better.

As stated previously, public transportation in Rowlett is currently limited to DART buses, and while future DART rail service expansion is planned to/from Rowlett, it is still a way's out (2011+).

There are currently four locations in Rowlett where you could board a bus to downtown Dallas, but as stated, this would require a transfer at the Garland station to continue into downtown Dallas. These are:

1 - Rowlett Chamber, 3910 Main St, Rowlett, 75088
2 - Rowlett City Hall, 3905 Main St, Rowlett, 75088
3 - Rowlett High School, 4700 Kirby Rd, Rowlett, 75088
4 - Rowlett Park & Ride, 5000 Martin, Rowlett 75088

Here is the link to DART Rail and Bus system:
