Thanks to everyone for the suggestions. I'm hearing a lot of Plano, especially east Plano, Richardson, Carrollton, maybe Addison and Irving.

We're still in the really early stages so this is all helpful. I noticed that nobody has suggested Garland - is that mainly because of the commute factor, or are there other issues to be aware of? Just from looking at housing websites it seems like we'd have a lot of options within our price range. Like I said above, the commute is only a minor issue for us - my husband drives to work maybe once or twice a week at most, the rest of the time he's either telecommuting or traveling out of town anyway.

I would start driving around a lot on weekends... just start almost anywhere and go to open houses.

I have friends on the west side of Garland, and it's VERY different from what I'm used to from ten years back. Clean, nice, diverse, certainly not up to Citydata Dallas standards, but so long as the commute is logical, I think it could serve you quite well.

That's going to be the real issue here -- DFW's road system is very good, but you DO need to game where you live vs where you work if you want to simplify and minimize your commute and get that time back into your life.
