I understand why folks shop WalMart, but I won't.

It's underwhelming in every single way.

From my limited experience shopping at HEB in Austin and SPI, I found them to be a bit nicer than your average mid scale grocery store. I would consider it a little better than Tom Thumb or Kroger but not anything special. I’ve heard that Central Market carries some HEB store brands and specialty items that other grocers don’t. Otherwise, you’ll probably have to make do with other stores.

I’ve read that HEB only has distribution centers in San Antonio and Houston. They try to do roundtrip same day shipments which puts most of DFW out of this range. HEB would have to open another distribution center closer to DFW.

H-E-B also has a distribution center in Waco.

Is the land it has there enough to garner an expansion?

I think he's implying that Waco is perhaps in range to serve the DFW market, should HEB decide that they want to break into that market.

I think the reason they haven't yet is because even though they can (and probably would) be successful there eventually, they WILL lose money while building the distribution network, stores, and brand there that they otherwise would not have. The question for them ends up being when do they want to go all in to take that hit?

They probably could have done it years ago if they wanted, but it seems like a lot of that capital went into store upgrades - as others said, there's no more old-school Pantry stores (at least in Houston) and they've been putting some serious money into upgrading and building new stores in the last 5-10 years.

Perhaps the DFW move will come when they've gotten their Central Texas and Houston networks where they want them to be, but they just don't see themselves as quite there yet.

Waco is still pretty far from DFW. It's close enough apparently for them to sell products with high markups at Central Market, but not H-E-B.

I was down in George town last week and I had to go into a HEB to see what all the hype was. I didnt go into the produce or meat area but wasnt to impressed, kinda looked dumpy. It was a weekday and I have to say they had a lot of checkers where as kroger you will be lucky if there are 2 on a weekend.
