We need to have the DE filter cleaned while I watch and learn so I can do it myself next time.
Also need to fix or replace the pool light bulb. I think it's fiber optic. Light works but very weak, bulb seems cloudy.

Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced pool guy who can help?

Check with your local Leslie's Pool supplies store. They have usually very reliable contacts.

Thanks, but seems to me they will be overpriced since they are 'with' Leslies pool. I'm cheap, willing to pay for expertise but not for affiliation or referral.

You might be able to clean your DE filter yourself. Do you have an owners manual? If not, google the type of filter you have and perhaps the owner's manual is posted on the manufacturers website.

We did this when we lived in our past house. You basically just lift the DE filter out of it's compartment (make sure the pool pump is turned off), rinse it off w/a hose, replace. Turn the pool pump back on and regulate pressure to fill up the DE compartment with pool water. Put the recommended DE back into the pool basket suction in the pool so it will coat the filter.

You make it sound easy. Maybe I should give it a shot. I don't have the manual but I will google it.

I still need help with the lights however. This is minor issue but would be fun to have it working for the kiddos. It has a color wheel so light changes colors. I haven't seen it work since it has been this way since we purchased this house last summer.

>>You make it sound easy.<<

My husband was a little intimidated, but it really wasn't bad at all. We did it about twice a year (we were in FL and had a pool cage, so not much debris got into the pool) You can also go to a place like Leslie's, and often find someone there that can answer questions, they can be very helpful.

I forgot ... you might need a lube of some sort when you put the filter compartment back together that helps to form a water tight seal on the compartment.

I had to clean the DE filter out a couple of times during the season. and then a few times in earlyu spring when our HUGE Live oak tree shed its pollen pods. The pool looked like it had shag carpeting on it and you couldn't see the light at all. After letting the filter drain, I just undid the clamp and ring holding it together (the old stainlest steel version from the 70's), lifted of the top half of the filter, undid the bracket that hold the fins in place, and being careful wit the little hose that comes up through the bracket. I carefully removed the delicate fins that were coated in DE, scooped out by hand the remaining DE trying to not let any fall into the open intakes where the fins attached. Hosed of the fins and got them real clean, and then carefully put it all back together. If you have any fins that are damaged, Leslie's has replacements. After evereything is together, turn it on, blead air out of the top with the valve on the guage and then load up with the prescribed amount of DE through the skimmer. Our takes 9 coffee cans worth.
