Hello,

I am thinking about moving to Texas from Alabama. I really like Texas, and I relate to it a lot more. I want to move I guess near the Dallas/Fort Worth area. I have always watched King of the Hill, and I want to
move to a neighborhood like that. The houses are a single story Ranch style, with alleys behind them. Are there any neighborhoods that look really similar to this? Thanks!

Is this a joke? As the above poster mentioned, Arland is a fictionalized version of Garland, TX. It's sort of a satire, so it's not really an area people would aspire to live in.

In terms of that style of house with alleys, almost all of north Dallas & many Collin County suburbs have alleys. Neighborhoods in Central & East Plano and Richardson come to mind.

having grown up in Garland, I always thought the King of the Hill neighborhood reminded me of either areas south of Buckingham and between 1st St and Garland Rd or even the area of Miller and Pleasant Valley just west of Centerville right down to the demographics of the time. There are neigbhorhoods like that all over Garland, though that look just like that, but I felt like I knew those characters.

I've read interviews where Mike Judge said it was based on Richardson.

I can tell you from first-hand experience that my Richardson neighborhood is not like King of the Hill. That's not to say some of the dudes don't get together for beers. They do. But they don't drink in the alley...it's definitely more of a backyard thing.

Some of the "cool people" in the neighborhood with similarly-aged kids do hang out together in each others' yards but if you're not in that clique, you definitely won't get an invitation to hang.

I thought Office Space was based on Richardson and King of the Hill on Garland.

If you Google it you'll see pages of citations where Mike Judge (the creator of the show) claims he based King of the Hill on Richardson. Like I said, I don't see that many similarities.

I always saw Office Space as being set in some kind of generic American city; only people from Texas would really recognize the landmarks. I recognized a lot of them because I spent a lot of time in both Austin and Dallas around the time it was filmed. Both have changed a LOT since then. Most people, especially 20 years ago, didn't really know what Dallas & Austin looked like except for maybe the skylines...and the movie didn't show those.
