You can get around on public transport, though it's reach is severely limited. There are reasonably priced houses with reasonable commutes to jobs in all parts of the metro area, it just may not be the biggest or newest house. You simply have to prioritize your commute over other aspects.

I believe the average commute for the middle class in DFW is around 24 minutes, which is among the shortest for a major metro in the US. Its much longer for the lower classes and shorter for the upper class.

One thing I noticed living in DFW is that people don't do long commutes. When I first moved to DFW people thought I was crazy for having an hour commute. I was loving it because I thought it was short LOL.

1. Budget?
2. Job location?
3. Requirements/preferences? Do you have a spouse or kids? Do you have pets? Do you want an apartment or a house?
4. Commute preference? What is a reasonable commute time to you?

Irving feels old and run down compared to many of the other suburbs in the metro area. I think it was rated one of the most boring cities in America.

My commute is about 10 minutes. But it kinda depends on where you live and where you work, doesn't it?

Wait, what? I've lived in DFW my entire life and that's not true. And tornadoes are actually quite rare here. Growing up I lived in a rural area and we had a lot of cars, an RV, and a boat. None of them were ever destroyed by hail or tornadoes even though they were sitting outside. From the age of 16-22, my car was parked outside 24/7. It only got hailed on once or twice and that was dime sized, so there was no damage.
