One of our neighbors decided to combine their back to school drive with a hurricane supply drive. Except that it was a mangled mess. And now our community collection site is having to deal with people trying to drop off school supplies and unhappy donors.

I used to volunteer with The Salvation Army.................probably 25% of its donated goods are literally unusable trash.

Give money.

ETA - It's also rather sickening to see people hanging out by unmanned donation areas waiting to pilfer donations.

I volunteered to sort donation collections last week and there is a very good reason why some charities do NOT accept used clothing. Even though people mean well and donate clothes to people that they think have lost everything, do you really think an evacuee wants to wear your circa 1980's prom dress or an outdated winter jacket? The manpower and logistics to even sort the garbage bags of "used clothing" takes away from the manpower needed to sort and organize the bare essentials (i.e. Stacking diaper boxes, sorting toiletries, etc), plus some charities simply don't have the space to hold all of the used clothes.

Our church has a local church nearby to the area which is acting as distribution center. We are sending a truck and they passed out lists what items they wanted. Non perishable foods (I added peanut butter) NEW socks still in their packages (I gave toddler and other small sizes), and a list of toiletries (they requested travel sizes), cleaners, bug repelent, diapers for young and old. I got a box together, added rubber waterproof shoes. I'm hoping everything we send is useful and goes to the right people.

Thank you and your church
Many Houston churches are getting donations from churches in other areas in their denominations or via friends
Some people are still in shelters
And some probably wont go back

We donated money, not things. They don't need our junk.

A lady from our area did organize a feminine hygiene product drive though. I thought that was sweet since this is an area that's often overlooked in disaster relief. Apparently some others had the same idea, though, as some donors said they had to go pretty far from home to find these products at Sam's & Costco.

Yep, money not clothes. Exception: new clothing items (tee shirt, jersey bottoms, underwear) in sizes XXL+. I read that the super big people (so very many in Texas) are not easily finding clothing and underwear.
