My family is considering a move to the north Dallas suburbs for a wonderful job opportunity. We have two children in middle and high school. Although I do not feel it is ideal to move the children, the job opportunity might be too good too pass up. In order to make this move more appealing to my children, I would like to find out information about computer/technology classes offered at local schools. My son's goal is to major in some type of computer science in college. Does anyone have students in Plano, Frisco, or Prosper that could comment on their son/daughter's experience with these types of classes?

Im not as familiar with the high schools you mentioned but Allen has tons of computer and technology classes. They are building a brand new STEAM school, offer certifications and dual college credit classes. The academic benefit to having 4500 students is an unlimited number of classes. There are some areas in Allen that are very accessible to the employment centers along DNT and in close proximity to the new STEAM school.

You can find every ISD's high school course catalog online. That way you can check which specific classes are available.

We were able to eliminate several ISD's and focus on others that way.

You can look into TAMS, Dallas Tech Magnet, Plano, Allen & Coppell's STEAM academies. However, if he is aiming for top CS programs in colleges, he better take most rigrous high school courses in math and science and prepare to ace PSAT/ACT/SAT exams. In his free time, he can join CS clubs/competitions through school and take summer courses in computers. There are lots of tech companies here in Plano, Plano places students there for summer internships and they also have some arrangement with UTD for research during school year.

UTD has a good CS department but obviously more ambitious kids look at MIT, Caltech, Berkeley, Carnige Mellon etc. If they start arranging their cards right, by senior year they'll be in good position to apply to top CS programs.

Fun fact : Plano ISD allows AP CS to fulfill foreign language course requirement so STEM oriented students who want to take more STEM courses can do so. PISD has a killer robotics team and brings home science fair gold all the time.
