Can you tell me more about Lake Ray Hubbard? I tried to find an official site but didn't see one. I saw that it was about 30 minutes away from East Dallas, so if hubby, doggie, and I would like to go out for a Saturday on the lake, could we rent a boat or find a beach to hang out on or drive the boat to a beach or island? Should we rent a cabin for a night or is it okay to make a day trip only?

What would you do for fun there?

Thank you!

Lake Ray Hubbard is very large, but it is for boat and fishing. For various reasons, swimming is not allowed, and hence there are no beaches or islands. However you will see people in power boats, sail boats, jet skis, wake boarding, water skiing, you name it.

Mary's right... unless you happen to fall off your skis or out of your boat... no Lake Hubbard swimming!

Here are some excellent recommendations from the Texas Wildlife site...

fisher, Lake Ray Hubbard is between Garland, Mesquite and Rockwall. It is placed between some major burbs in the Dallas area so it is a MAJOR recreational lake. You won't find a cabin for rent or camping but you can find boating and fishing and Bass Pro Shops on the shore. I am not sure of any swim beaches on the lake since the majority of the shoreline is privately owned. Hubbard is about 30 minutes from downtown Dallas and is basically a lake in the city. Lake Lavon has swimming, boating, camping and fishing and is less crowded and is just north of Hubbard in the Wylie area. I know you can rent boats/jet skis at Chandlers Landing on Hubbard and you may be able to at Collin Creek Marina on Lavon as well. There are a ton of lakes in the area so it may take you a while to fins the one you like best.

The lakes in the immediate Dallas area are different for some reason - they are more day boating/water sports than weekend cabin getaways. We do go to Lake Ray Hubbard w/our ski boat, it's a nice lake, gets rather busy though in the summer. There are picnic and grill areas around the perimeter of the lake as well as a couple of marinas in which you could rent a boat I'm sure.

If you are looking for a long weekend getaway, try the Frio river cabins or even tubing on the Guadalupe river in the hill country

You can also take your boat and drop off at The Harbor, located on the Rockwall side of the lake. They have places to park your boat. You can relax in your boat, and then you can take advantage of the wonderful restaurants, shops, and boardwalk setting there. And take your camera, too. It's become one of my favorite places in the Metroplex.

Thanks everyone. So the best swimming lake closest to Dallas in your opinion is? Is it Lake Lavon? And the best weekend trip would be Frio river? I didn't know there were so many lakes near Dallas.

I have never been to Lake Ray Hubbard...why is it that you swim in Lake Ray Roberts and Lake Lewisville and not Ray Hubbard...they're all used for drinking water aren't they, what makes one swimmable and one not?

Try Lake Tawakoni, which is just an hour east. There is a new State Park there, plus several beaches for swimming. I'd bet you can find cabins for rent, too.
