No windows, surround sound and soooo comfy in our media room and perfect for my husband to "cave" and watch the games.....so worth it for me to see him ENJOY it! Perfect for our popcorn and a movie nightl Neither of us wanted a high maintenance pool!

We built a decent media room but really didn't use it much after the new wore off. When we sold it couple months ago our realtor had Moana playing and a young family bought our house. They absolutely loved the media room. If and when I do it all over again. It's going to have a small bar with three taps and jammed with pinball machines and 80's arcade cabinets. My wife still doesn't know the real reason why I'm insisting on a large bonus room in our new house.

Default Media room

To each their own but when we were looking we avoided houses that had rooms that were specific to media only - i.e. - no windows, tiered seating or closets. There are so many ways to watch media now. For us and our family it was a big negative since we would have to spend money to convert it to (what we considered) more useful, pleasant space. As others have said though is what really matters is if you will enjoy it considering the cost.

We built ours out - it was cheap square footage to buildout. I believe we spent around $5k for the screen and a really nice projector from Starpower. Total investment probably $20k

Did not use it as much as I would have liked, but it was a hit when family and friends came over to watch sporting events. We got our value back out of it when we sold, so no complaints.

So many homes in Dallas (but interestingly it was not as popular in Houston where we recently moved or our town prior to Dallas), it seemed like a no-brainer when we built due to the low relative cost and it seemed like a necessity at our price point.

Excatly..... we love our's and it has been over two years in the house. Would never trade anything for the media room, one of the wisest addition in our house.

I don't think it's solely a price point issue. We are in east dallas and space is at more of a premium in our area. There have been several homes built in our area that are quite pricey and do not feature media rooms. In the north suburbs I am sure it is fairly standard. But the build out cost is only part of the equation. There are also property taxes. And for those who know they won't use a media room or will use it once a month at most, it's wasted and expensive space.

Maybe a lot of the people I know just don't watch as much tv as everyone else.
Busy working and playing sports or gardening or whatever.

I will say that the folks I know who love their media rooms...man, it's worth every penny to them and they do it up real nice.
But besides that guy I know who actually HAS that full-size theater in his house, no media room I've been in or seen is really truly a movie theater experience. And I've been in a lot of really nice ones.

Media rooms are marketed for older men to spend money buying stuf to fill them... while kids and teens are watching their own screens in their own rooms and not watching tv. They kill their time on YouTube and instagram.

For the most part it didn't and doesn't work like that at my house.
