Hello,

We are moving from Cleveland, Ohio to Texas. My husband will have a commute to Irving everyday and looking for suggestions. Currently, we live in the suburbs of Cleveland, close to Cuyahoga National Park and we are spoiled. Apart from long winters, we have fallen in love with this city and what the park offers us from spring through fall...we live like 5 minutes away from hiking and biking trails. I am personally dreading this move because my visits to Plano,Allen in Dallas area made me notice the dearth of greenery around, just huge houses and wide roads...

We don't have kids and so don't have to live in the best school district. We are looking for suggestions of neighborhoods that are closer to trails and parks. We hike and we are runners... please suggest suburbs that are safe, reasonable commute to Irving, closer to trails and houses in wooded neighborhoods...maybe I am bit obsessed about having trees around !! Thank you...

Since you don't have to worry about kids I would recommend North Arlington near River Legacy Park. It's not a national park but there are 8 miles of paved trails and a 10 mile mountain biking trail along the Trinity River and through the wetlands and forest. The park also has a nature center that offers a variety of activities for all ages including adult yoga classes, composting classes, workshops, etc. It's also a (relatively) easy commute to Irving and there are some wooded neighborhoods on hilly streets. The neighborhood also has a very long and hilly sidewalk along Green Oaks Blvd (a main road) that's popular with runners and dog walkers.

And remember. You won't have to shovel snow!

Tcualum nailed probably the best location for you, happy hunting! I'd strongly suggest renting for the first 6-12 months to confirm that's where you want to be though.

You can get a nice home ranch style home in that area for your budget. The zip code you'll be mainly looking in is 76006. Make sure the home is north of I-30. Get an agent who knows that area well because some parts of the area are better than others. I like the [realtor sites not allowed] for home searching. As for your commute to Irving, the main ways to get there from Arlington are 360 or the 161 toll road. The traffic on both can get rather hairy for a relatively short distance so you'll want to explore the back routes. I second renting an apartment at first so you can explore the area and make sure the commute works for you. There are some nice apartment complexes in that area such as the Amli off of Green Oaks. You need to be careful though because some of the complexes are run down and not safe. The area is a mixed bag.

Thank you for all the inputs. This is very helpful.

What do you think about the cities around the Joe Pool lake, like Cedar Hill, Duncanville, Desoto, Mansfield...will the drive be too bad to Irving and any safety concerns ? As per our internet search, we came to know southwest Dallas might fit our needs...Thoughts ?

First, welcome to Texas. As a NW Ohio native that has spent the last 30 years in and out of Texas, there is a lot to enjoy here. Haven't lived in north Texas, but can offer advice on things to do for trips through the central Texas area. The heat will take some adjustment, but the upside, as previously mentioned, you don't have to shovel sunshine.

Southwest Dallas to Irving is going to be a long commute. The recent growth in Mansfield and Cedar Hill means a lot of traffic.
DeSoto is OK crime wise, Duncanville has some rougher areas. Avoid the southwest part of Dallas as it has high crime.
