We recently leased an apartment in Irving Texas (Resort at Jefferson Park in Las Colinas). We moved in October 7th. We are finding this apartment quite unsafe. We have had someone knock the door every alternate day since last one week.. twice during evening 7 PM and once at night 9:30 PM. We are so scared to open the door and ask as we don't know anyone in this area. During once of the visit, we heard that person saying our apartment number to someone in the phone. Also, last Saturday, there was some shoot out in a nearby building within this apartment complex.

We badly want to move out of this apartment. One of our office colleague living in TX mentioned that there is some 30 day look in period in Texas where someone can move out of the apartment if they don't like it. Is it true? He wasn't sure of the exact law/clause though. I read the lease fully and I don't find any such clause anywhere in the lease.

Is there anything that we could do other than breaking the lease and move out of this apartment? Basically it would cost 4 months of rent to break the lease immediately.. 60 days of notice + 2 months worth rent. We are planning to talk the apartment management tomorrow, but I am not expecting anything from that conversation other than agent paraphrasing the lease breakage terms.

Also please suggest some safety systems that we can install in the apartment. We might need it in case we don't find a cost effective way out.

You should check with leasing office, may be it’s one of the maintainance guy or some neighbor who was upset with noise? For security, call ADT security. Do install a video camera on your door.

Talk with your complex right away. I once moved into a complex and didn't like it. Talked with the leasing office about my options, and that is when they told me about their 30-day satisfaction policy. I was able to move out within 30 days, didnt't have to pay anything and got my deposit back. The policy was not in my lease, so i am so glad i talked to them.

Maybe they will allow you to switch units.
Maybe they will allow you to switch to a sister property.

Why is knocking on your door make you feel unsafe?
Could be lots and lots of different things.
Maybe next door neighbor wants to be friends.
Maybe the cable guy wanting to offer you install.
Maybe electric guy wanting to sell you electric service.
Do they have a courtesy officer you can call?
Could be someone looking for the last person who lived there.
Often police officers live on site to help with security.

I would guess where you are is as safe as any place in Irving.
