Good to know. I don't need the best school district since i have no kids. Just looking for a good one so my property value stays up.

A $450k home here is going to have a $9,000-10,000 tax bill. Property taxes are based on home value, so just like PA, a smaller, outdated home in a more expensive area will have a higher tax bill than a bigger, newer home in a less expensive area.

Your job is in central Dallas so you don't necessarily need to follow that rule if you live in the city. There are tons of neighborhoods that are sought after due to location and/or proximity to private schools that aren't tied to the local school quality whatsoever.

Like Midway Hollow (just north of Love Field) - zoned to decent to terrible public schools but no one uses them. They're either young marrieds who trade up by the time they need schools or famiiies who are going to use one of the dozen or so excellent privates (all the top privates in Dallas are in this general area) or professionals/ empty nesters who just want to live relatively close to downtown/uptown for work. Below average schools hasn't stopped values here from doubling in the last 10-ish years.

Wait, so property tax is not based on value but sqft in Pittsburgh?

No - Pittsburgh is technically allegheny County which is like Texas - sales value. But I live right outside of Pittsburgh in Butler County - which the taxes are really low compared to Allegheny County and Butler is based on square footage and what your house is made of (stone and brick is more expensive than siding, etc).
