I'm considering moving to Dallas. I've visited many times but wonder how much there really is to do in Dallas if I move there. I lived in Minneapolis a long time. We have lakes to walk around, many bike trails and many opportunities for outdoor sports.

I grew up near Philly, and there is a lot to see there for historical items -- not to mention the closeness to the Jersey shore and major cities like NYC and DC.

I have siblings in San Francisco, and there is definitely a lot to do there.

I like the Dallas temps and the cost of living. But how would you rate it for things to do?

"Outdoor sports" in Dallas = drinking on a patio. That's all you need to know.

SickoftheSunbelt - that's not necessarily true. We have lakes and trails as well. Granted, the climate may not promote the use of said outdoor opportunities at some times of the year, but that's everywhere (save from maybe San Diego).

Things to do in no particular order:

Regret that you moved to Dallas

Gimme a break. We moved here from VA almost two years ago and we've never been bored. There are tons of concerts, sporting events, festivals, art shows, museum exhibitions, and the like. There are lots of small towns in the area that are fun to explore and yes there is shopping too.

We don't regret moving here for a minute. If you're hung up on no beach or mountains, you can take the hundreds of thousands of dollars you saved on a house and take a vacation to places with a beach or mountains a few times a year.

you're only as happy as you allow yourself to be. so, if your mindset is that dallas is miserable, guess what? you will be miserable. sure, i would love to eventually move to a place with a beach, but at this stage in my life, the cost of living and the job opportunities in dallas are too great to pass up. not to mention, it doesn't hurt to have a friend with a boat!

Well, I couldn't name all the things to do in Dallas. But on a regular weekend, my wife and I may go sailing on White Rock Lake, go to the Nasher Sculpture Garden, eat a five star restaurant, go to one of the 5 pro-sports teams' games, or stroll down Knox-Henderson.

Nope, we don't have a beach or mountains. But anything is accessible by plane. We're the hub of American Airlines. Plus, there's the great Texas Hill Country, the Gulf Coast, and the deserts West Texas to explore by car.

Dallas is a really good place to _live_ (not necessarily an outstanding place for visitors/tourists). It is so convenient here - everything you need day-to-day is very accessible and affordable.

It also offers sustainable outdoor activities and entertainment. There are numerous parks, sport fields, lakes, clubs, restaurants, theaters. Also, climate is very good for outdoor activities from October to May. Around 8 months! Then it gets hot to sizzling.

Sure, it doesn't have gorgeous topography and an abundance of lush wilderness (though it does exist), but let me tell you, having spent almost 3 decades in Austria - which offers spectacular outdoor activities - I was not disappointed by my first decade in Dallas.

The Mountains aren't that far either from us. Oklahoma as the Arbuckles and Arkansas has the Ozarks. From my house, the mountains are about a 2 hour trip.

There is plenty to do here if you want. We have beautiful lakes, trials, camping facilities... We also have our share of fine arts here too. Ballet, Opera, Outdoor Concerts. Mom Garland puts on a huge concert venue yearly.. isn't that in the summer? I remember when Van Cliburn came out and did a concert there, what a rare treat!
