I'm thinking about installing a doggy door in a low-to-the-ground window. However, I recently spotted a two foot long snake in my back yard. (I think it was a rat snake.)

If I install the doggy door, how do I keep unwanted critters, like snakes and mice, from coming into the house?

I looked into an electronic door, but they are more money than what I wanted to spend.

Don't forget possums, raccoons and armadillos.

They have doors which only open by the collar controller on the dog.

Our dog was used to one when we got him, and likes to go in and out. Since we only have a French door, dh made an insert to use with the door ajar and the doggy door was mounted in it. It was just a prototype, really.

Since our dog is really good about asking to go out, we will probably do away with it. We anticipate replacing the French door with a slider, so if there is a doggy door insert available, we’ll probably get it.

The doggy doors have a latch, so you can lock it at night, or whenever it doesn’t need to be open.

Seriously? I have always had a doggie door and although I have had snakes and the occasional field rat in my yard, nothing but my dogs has ever come through the doggie door.

Raccoons might do that but if you have a fenced yard I don't think raccoons are getting in there...

Really people, unless you live in Australia, or someplace where you regularly get poisonous snakes in you toilet, I think you are worrying too much.

I’ve seen one small snake in my yard in 9 years, and no critters except squirrels.
