In California, I've found quite a few of these, usually in Asian shopping centers (despite the cost of living.) Are there any cheap barber shops like those in, say, Plano, Richardson, Carrollton, etc?

Great clips card $60 for 5 hair cuts. You can find great clips everywhere. Google it.

There are still some individual shops that are quite cheap ... you will have to search for them. In the past couple of years I noticed one cheapie old shop becoming "retro" and "upscale" with a corresponding increase in price. While you are searching I do think Great Clips is probably your best bet.

DIY is the way to go. I used to go to Great clips, the one that was the closest to where i lived was charging $18 plus tip. After going there for a couple times, I bought the tools myself online(see link below) and couple other accessories. All together, I probably invested no more than $35.

The 1st time that i used the kit, i didn't really know what I was doing, so my hair ended up looking like it was bitten by dog and I was a little embarrassed/anxious when I went to work the next day; thank God I don't work in sales. But eventually, we figured out the correct cutting kit to use and I have never been to a barber shop in years. It is a little difficult to diy, it is best if you have another person cut it for you, like your friend/gf/wife.

Just saw a deal for $10 haircuts on Tuesday at the shop next to First Chinese BBQ in Richardson. But yeah, you'll have to look around as they won't be advertised as much as others

It's actually not regular at all. My friend use to wait for them all the time since there's a Great Clips 1min from his house. I told him to tell me whenever they have the sale. It happens roughly only 2x/year

not true..... I have been getting their 6.99 and 7.99 coupons in mail (thru Valpak or directly from Great Clips) for the past 12 months at almost every 30 to 45 days.
