It's the most wonderful time of the year: the National Merit Scholarship Corporation has released the list of its 2019 semifinalists!

https://www.scribd.com/document/3884...-Semifinalists

Whoops, sorry I mistitled the thread. Should be 2019 NMSF.

That's an astounding performance for St Marks.

Right, eyeballing that list it looks to be about 30 students. That's just amazing.

Every year it bugs me for no particular reason that Highland Park is listed as being in Dallas, Parish is listed as Dallas instead of Farmer's Branch, but then Greenhill is listed as Addison. They are inconsistently specific/accurate. Does anybody have any idea why? Do the schools self-report the town or something? To be clear, this bugs me once a year for like 30 seconds when I see the list and at first I wonder if Greenhill has zero until I remember to look under Addison - then I forget about it until the next year.

35 at PESH vs. 14 at Plano Senior. Is that a trend or anomaly?

4 at Jesuit, 3 at ESD, 1 at Parish and 1 at JP II.

If all those TAMS students didn't make it, what schools would they mostly attend? Frisco/Plano?

It's representative of the serious lack of relative investment/desirablity across the entire center of Plano at worst, and that PESH is one of the best schools in DFW, doing more with less, at best. I say 'relative' because it still outperformed most of its peers.

One other point: The number of 'Caucasian' sounding-names [problematic I know, but I'm making a point] at the 3 Plano ISD schools who got NMSF is pretty similar (5-7), and they were all bested by Flower Mound who isn't leaning so heavily on their Asian population to get high marks. That or FlowerMound is a crazy land of Asian/caucasian marriage diversity. So whatever Flower Mound is doing should be copied across DFW, not Plano.

Part of this could be that Highland Park and University Park use "Dallas" for their US Postal address. All correspondence to/from the NMSC would have "Dallas" on it.

Seems like the trend among the Clark HS and even Vines students to forgo Plano Sr and go to TAMS is trending stronger. Several of my daughter's close friends who would have had the the highest GPA's going into Plano Sr this year as Juniors decided to go to TAMS instead. So they will take the PSAT this year as TAMS students. Believe it or not one of the reasons they decided to go to TAMS is because they felt it was an easier workload overall. I think they are taking classes alongside the regular UNT college students.

Both my daughters also knew people who transferred to Plano East for their IB program but I'm not aware really how popular that is.

just FYI, TAMS kids, for the most part, take classes only with other TAMS kids.
