So I just realized my property is located within the Mill Creek floodplain. I live in old east dallas between 75 and ross, south of Carroll Ave. Depending on the study/report, it appears my property is at risk of between 3ft and 8ft of flooding in a 100yr event. The resources I've pulled from the city of Dallas aren't very consistent or precise. On the DCAD zoning map, I fall within the the teal colored mill creek flood plain overlay - but I'm not seeing a key that explains the difference in flood depth between the colors (red, yellow blue etc). Can anyone offer guidance here? Do I need to look into flood insurance? My street has flooded twice since I moved in a couple years ago. The water climbed half-way up my driveway, and was probably 2-3 ft deep in the middle of the street. My lender never mentioned flood insurance.

I came across a Mill Creek Tunnel proposal from 2016 - any info on the status of this project?

Thanks

Search here for the FEMA flood map. https://msc.fema.gov/portal/search This will identify the most up to date FEMA flood map. If you have water 2-3 feet in your street I would certainly look into flood insurance. If you are in any of the FEMA flood zones, your lender will typically require flood insurance as a condition of your loan. I just searched that map, and the entire zone where you are located has a rating of X - minimal flood risk. Flood insurance for this zone is particularly cheap, maybe a few hundred a year, worth considering if I was you.

Buy flood Insurance now. Seriously, make the call tomorrow and do it. The standard FEMA zone X policy is so ridiculously subsidized.

Get flood insurance, your cheapest appliance or piece of furniture probably cost more than flood insurance. Get flood insurance. Houses that weren't even in 100 year floodplains flooded in Houston. Get it now, don't delay! Call your insurance agent, they can get you signed up. If your regular insurance agent can't get it for you, call another one. It's not that expensive. Your belongings, home and peace of mind are worth a lot more than a few hundred dollars.
