So I know this question has been asked before, but they seem to be older threads. My husband recently retired from the military and we thought we had settled in the NoVa region for good. However an opportunity has come up in Dallas. Problem is, if we were to move my job would put me in downtown Fort Worth. So.... we are trying to find the unicorn of places to live - excellent schools (1 kid in preschool, 1 in elem and 1 in middle school (or jr. high in TX), shortest commute as possible, and this is probably a unique requirement but travel/select baseball teams (my son is a catcher and currently plays travel ball). Our price range is about $650K - could go higher but would like to keep it below. We just did a major remodel up here in NoVa so have no desire to do that again - so move in ready areas.

Any thoughts?

Also, if I were able to get a job in Dallas, but IF - what areas would you recommend with the criteria listed above. It seems as if home prices are higher in Dallas, so Im not sure if $650K is realistic?

Thank you!

Where exactly is the job in Dallas?

In general, the areas that come to mind are Grapevine, Colleyville, Southlake, and Coppell. If you think you might eventually both be in Dallas, maybe Coppell makes sense, but it would be a long commute to downtown FW.

I'm confused. Is the job in Dallas or downtown Fort Worth? Those are two different major cities that are +-30 miles apart depending on where you measure from. If it's in Fort Worth, you need to move your post to the Fort Worth forum.

I took the OP to mean that one of them would be working in Dallas and the other in Ft. Worth.

For easy commute to Dallas or Ft. Worth in general, PLUS baseball, put Grapevine at the top of your list. Add Southlake, but your budget is tight for Southlake. Consider Flower Mound for the baseball teams, but not the easiest commute to Ft. Worth. Colleyville is a great location, but they aren't known for baseball.

Honestly, with kids that young I would not try to live midway between your jobs. I would choose to live either in Dallas or in Fort Worth with one spouse working within 10-15 minutes of home & schools. You never know when you’ll need to pick up a sick kid from school, plus all the daytime school events & afterschool activities. Throw one wreck into the commute mix and you could both end up being an hour+ away from your kiddos.

The “easier” commute is living in Dallas and commuting to Fort Worth but it costs more to live in Dallas. Fort Worth to Dallas commute is rough because you’re driving into the sun both ways.

This article is really helpful, thank you!

We could go up in our budget, but would prefer lower (lol, dont we all). I will check out Southlake.

As for Grapevine, it seems as if their schools aren't as great. Not bad just not as highly rated. Has anyone had any issues?

The reason GCISD schools aren’t quite as high as Carroll ISD or Flower Mound is because they do have a fair amount of low income and English as a Second Language students. The other districts don’t have this issue. Even with this anomaly, GCISD still manages to be one of the best in DFW. Remember that in Texas, school districts don’t follow city limits so Grapevine and Colleyville share a school district.

If you’re looking for a reasonable commute to both Dallas and Fort Worth, Grapevine and Colleyville will definitely be your best options.

There are something like 140 public neighborhood high schools in DFW. Grapevine continues to rank around #15 which puts it right up there in the top 10%ish in DFW. Southlake ranks #2 so keep in mind when you’re comparing a great school to the second best one. Your kids will get a great education in either district, just a matter of what you want to spend on housing.
