Hi, I am palinning a move to one of the surrounded smaller communities around Dallas (not sure yet, possible as far as Sherman) and I have five kids!

I am aware that Texas is a very proud state and was wondering if you had any pointers on what historical, local, as well as athletic info I should teach my kids before the move so their are learned enough to survive the texas locals without having to be educated by them at every turn.

I am concerned at how the southerners may take my little northerners and I want them to be knowledgable and learn to appreciate everything Texas!

HEY!!!!!!!!! I'm a Native Texan, Dallasite AND Southerner thru and thru and I LOVE ICE HOCKEY!!!!!!! Been a Dallas Stars season ticket holder since 1996. You would be surprised how many of us natives are REALLY INTO HOCKEY! I'll take hockey over watching football, baseball and basketball anyday.

Did you know the Dallas Stars are the most successful expansion team in the NHL! Other cities have brought in and PAID people from the Stars to give them advice when theirs has been floundering trying to gain a draw even from cities that have a HUGE concentration of northern transplants. Now the NHL is going to get rid of some of those teams but the Stars are here in Dallas to stay.

Be forewarned, we DO try to convert all northerners to Texans as fast as we can!

Truthfully, the Dallas area is very diverse and is hugely made up of transplants from everywhere... a true melting pot... so I'm sure you'll have no problems... especially the children... in fitting right in immediately!

It's not a matter of finding something to do for the children, it's a matter of how to fit it all in (and how much chauffeuring the parents want to do!) as programs for the children are our specialty here! Anything and everything that they could possibly want to do... it's here... for athletics, there are youth programs both in the schools as well as in each community for baseball, basketball, football, volleyball, soccer, fast-pitch softball, track, aquatics, tennis, golf, gymnastics, and yes, even youth ice hockey! In addition, there are choirs, music programs (orchestras and band) and art programs as well as dance, drill team and cheerleading for all ages.

For Texas historical reference, this would be a good place to start: Texas - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

For an example of youth sports offered, see: Collin County Sports Associations

And, for youth ice hockey, see: Dallas Hawks Hockey > Home

Oh, and just a few last tidbits and all of you will be on your way ...learn to say "y'all" instead of "you guys" and be sure to ask for "coke" instead of "pop" or "soda"!

Welcome to Texas!

I've been living in Sherman for nearly 3 years and still feel like an outsider. Don't have kids, but don't be fooled by their school ratings here. The local newspaper (which is supposed to be written at 6th grade level) has major typos in their articles. I'm a real estate agent and have been in contact with many people, most locals are not well educated. The more affluent are transplants or educated elsewhere.

Also consider the weather. If you are from the north, YOU WILL BE MISERABLE HERE! The humidity is ridiculous. The only way to be comfortable in summer is spending it indoors with the AC on. People will not try to convert you. Most are friendly or totally the opposite. Children adapt well.

I'm planning to move out of here soon. The weather, the bugs, the taxes, the lack of sophistication and education, and no decent restaurant, only chain restaurants (and that's only recently) is making me cranky. If you don't have to move here, DON"T!

And then back to the real world... I moved here two years ago from Virginia.

The weather here is wonderful 10 months out of the year, bearable the other 2 months. The humidity is NOT a problem unless you're from Phoenix and are used to dry skin and sore sinus cavities... it's way less humid here than the mid-Atlantic, Florida, or the gulf coast. And I find the bugs are few and far between, especially compared to Virginia.

And as far as taxes go, we cut our state/local tax burden in half since there is no income tax, and you choose your property tax based upon how expensive of a home you wish to buy. A guy I work with moved from here to CA and went from having money put into a savings account to barely affording food because of the nearly 10% income tax on top of all of the other taxes he is forced to pay in CA.

Don't listen to the haters... they've obviously never ventured far from their nest if they think there are no good restaurants in the area. Sure there are plenty of chains, but if you take the time to look, there are plenty of local places that have great food as well.
