I am going to assume you are NOT talking about a boiler, and instead are talking about your water heater serving your sinks and showers?

If so, you need a wifi addressable water heater timer. Preferably programmable. However, please note that you need to understand how it works to be able to set it properly to actually realize energy/$ savings while still having hot water available to you when you need it.

I recommend you work with a professional to help you select, install, and show you how to program the thermostat. I would still recommend you do some of your own research first so that you understand what you are looking for and can better articulate it to the contractor.

The question is, WHY?

If you have some idea that you will save money by having your hot water less hot at certain times of the day, I can assure you that this savings will be pretty much theoretical only. You will have to re-heat the whole tank from [lower temp] to [higher temp] once or more a day, and that will consume almost exactly as much energy as just maintaining it at [higher temp] all the time.

If it were me, I would find something else to spend time and money on. If you are trying to save money on utility bills, I can pretty much guarantee you there are several items in your house that are orders of magnitude more important than this.

Get a programmable flow through pump. Food for thought - cold showers when you loose your phone?

You wouldn't get cold showers just because you lose your phone. Most likely youre setting a programmed timer and not using the remote access portion except to adjust schedule or set vacation mode etc. as needed. Additionally, there is still a physical unit with an interface that you can adjust as well.

However, in reality I mostly agree with turf3. There are certainly documented cases of savings, and I have used them even in commercial settings and realized savings. However, the savings are generally minuscule and it really only applies in very specific use cases. There are certainly other areas that you can focus on to save much more energy in your home.
